Parent and Adolescent Relationships

According to statistics, about 21 percent of the high school students report having had sex before the age of 13. By ninth grade, two-third of high school students have engaged in sexual activity, and by 12th grade, three-thirds. Yet the majority of these teens, as much as 60 percent overall and 76 percent among younger adolescents, regret their first experience and wish they had waited longer.

Our government, health officials, and advocates have responded to these troubling statics by demanding more sex education programs and greater access to contraceptives for minors. They assume that teens are unable to delay their sexual behavior. One of the most important factors that seem to be missed, that can influence adolescents’ sexual behavior and help make for healthier development (coming into ones’ being) is a STRONG parent-child relationship.

Healthy relationships between parents and adolescents do not develop overnight. They take time and the effort of all parties. In healthy relationships, both the parent and adolescents understand that they are A TEAM. They can express their feelings, share in the joys and pains of life (a part of their growth collectively and individually), have a sense of mutual respect- sharing their love, resolving conflicts peacefully, and are supportive of each other. They express forgiveness and understand that no one is perfect, therefore they work through problems.

Safe spaces are created for talks about sexual feelings and the need to have affection and closeness; benefits of abstinence, postponing sex and setting limits on sexual behavior; and the potential challenges of unplanned pregnancy faced by parents and the youth can prove to be effective.

Talking with your child about sexuality is also good preparation for future relationships. By providing accurate information, you can help shape your child’s sexual values and decision-making and encourage your child to think clearly and make a smart choice.
